Only In Alabama!

March 2, 2011

I found this on MSNBC.com:

A small child accidentally shot his mother Saturday night after finding the gun by the side of his injured father — who had just accidentally shot himself, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around 9 p.m. the BCSO was alerted to the shooting at 4621 Old Carney Road in Bay Minette. When they arrived at the home they found Allen and Aleisha Jones injured by gunshots.

When questioned by authorities, Allen Jones stated he had taken his Glock .40 handgun from the glove compartment of his truck. He was walking to the house when he tripped and fell. The gun discharged, and he was hit in the leg just above the knee, he told police.

Jones yelled to his wife for help. Aleisha Jones was upstairs bathing their young son when she heard her husband’s call for help. When she arrived on the screened porch, she tried to secure the gun but her son beat her to it.

As she attempted to take the gun from the child, a round fired. Aleisha Jones was hit in the left side of her neck.

I thought this was hilarious, and when I realized it happened in Alabama, it was of no surprise.
Go figure, something so moronic occurring in a part of the country well-known for it’s “backwoods rednecks”.
That’s not the only strange thing to occur in recent Alabama history, though.
I also found this on MSNBC:

Two Alabama families that had been fighting for years turned their feud into a full-scale riot Monday outside a small-town city hall, with up to 150 screaming people hurling tire irons and wielding baseball bats.

Eight people were arrested, and at least four were hurt, Trooper John Reese said. Two were taken to hospitals. The town’s police chief was hit in the head with a crowbar but was OK.

The two- or three-year-old feud apparently prompted a fight earlier in the day at a high school, after a window was shot out of a home Sunday night. Then, “all hell broke loose” later in the day, said Sgt. Carlton Hogue of the Perry County Sheriff’s Department.

“It was a full-scale riot is what it was,” said Tony Long, mayor of the town of 3,300 about 85 miles west of Montgomery.
Hogue said the rioters were “throwing jack irons, throwing tire irons, anything they could get their hands on.” Some people carried baseball bats and brooms.

Reese said two people were arrested at the high school during the initial disturbance. Relatives of the people who were arrested followed officers to police headquarters at city hall, and then the melee erupted.

Six more people were arrested at city hall, Reese said, and police called in reinforcements from surrounding cities. Some officers wore riot gear, and many planned to stay overnight to help maintain order.

Or how ’bout this one?
Again, thank you MSNBC for bringing me this gem!

A woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after she let her daughter ride in a cardboard box on top of their van, police said.

Albertville Police spokesman Sgt. Jamie Smith said the 37-year-old Alabama woman was arrested Sunday after police received a call about a minivan on a state highway with a child riding on top, The Huntsville Times reported.

Smith said the woman told police the box was too big to go inside the van, and that her daughter was inside the box to hold it down.

Smith said the mother told officers it was safe because she had the box secured to the van with a clothes hanger.

The 13-year-old daughter wasn’t harmed and was turned over to a relative. A jail worker said the mother was out on bond Monday.

Is there something in the water down south?
Or maybe it’s all that redneck inbreeding?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying everyone in Alabama is a moron.
I’m sure Alabama has no more morons than any other state.
I simply found the locations of these lovely stories entertaining!
