Right Wing Extremists

February 12, 2010

If you were to ask merriam-webster.com to define “Right-Wing“, you would learn very little. “The rightest division of a group or party.”

Merriam-Webster also tells us that the definition of “extremist” is “The quality or state of being extreme” and, “advocacy of extreme measures or views: radicalism“.

I do love the definition of “extreme”: “Existing in a very high degree“, “Going to great or exaggerated lengths: radical“, and, “Exceeding the ordinary, usual, or expected“.

The word “radical” seems to be mentioned more than once when the word “extreme” is involved. Merriam-Webster.com tells us that the word “radical” can be defined as, “marked by a considerable departure from the usual or traditional extreme.“, “tending or disposed to make extreme changes in existing views, habits, conditions, or institutions“, “of, relating to, or constituting a political group associated with views, practices, and policies of extreme change”, and “advocating extreme measures to retain or restore a political state of affairs “.

Terrorism: the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion.”

On April 7th, 2009 the United States Department of Homeland Security released “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment“.

For those of you who haven’t read this ten page document (PDF: http://www.fas.org/irp/eprint/rightwing.pdf), it is “one of a series of intelligence assessments published by the Extremism and Radicalization branch to facilitate a greater understanding of the phenomenon of violent radicalization in the United States.”

From what I gathered, all “Right Wing Extremists” are racist, hating the fact that our President is of African decent. They are all going to be angry when we start enforcing more laws and bans of guns. Veterans should be watched, as they may pose a threat to the government. The term “Rightwing Terrorist” is used about as often as “Rightwing Extremist”.

One paragraph reads, “The possible passage of new restrictions on firearms and the return of military veterans facing significant challenges reintegrating into their communities could lead to the potential emergence of terrorist groups or lone wolf extremists capable of carrying out violent attacks.

I’m sorry, but if you are planning on taking my guns away from me, I’m going to be quite angry as well. I’m not going to allow you to take my firearms out of my custody without putting up a fight.

A second paragraph: “Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS/I&A is concerned that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities.”

So, since the government trained military veterans to be the ultimate killing machine, we need to watch out for them too, right?

The document continues for a few pages, explaining what they think extremists are capable of doing and, basically, how to spot a right wing extremist.

At the very end of the document, in small print, it reads “DHS encourages recipients of this document to report information concerning suspicious or criminal activity to DHS and the FBI.”

What is considered suspicious? Would someone buying a specific gun be suspicious? Yesterday, someone I know purchased a 12 gauge tactical shotgun, made for breaking and entering homes and vehicles. I’m not going to lie, this gun is awesome! I want one now. But, could the fact that he bought a gun that’s good for nothing but killing people and breaking into homes be considered suspicious activity?

I listen to people I know voicing their opinion, one that is far right and extremely different from that of the current administration, often. Is that suspicious activity? Should I call the FBI and let them know who said what and when it was said?

Where do you draw the line? How does one decide what is and what isn’t suspicious terrorist or extremist activity?

The document even said that our own military veterans are possible threats. The men and women who gave their lives to this country, for whatever period of time, could become terrorists!

What has happened to this country? What happened to supporting our military and respecting them and everything they have done for us?

I think that all of this is terrible. This is just one topic that bothers me. One thing the current administration has done that I am uncomfortable with. One little document that I am not okay with, out of only the government knows how many.
